How heavy is an e-bike? Weights by type, and carrying one up stairs
Updated October 2026 · figures from the 147 e-bikes in our catalog
A regular bicycle weighs 20–30 lb. An e-bike adds a motor and a battery, plus a stronger frame and wheels to carry them, and typically weighs two to three times as much. In our catalog the typical e-bike weighs 70 lb with its battery. 22 of the 140 bikes with a published weight come in under 50 lb, and 69 weigh more than 70 lb.

Why weight matters
On the road, the motor makes weight almost disappear. It matters when the motor can’t help: carrying the bike up stairs, lifting it onto a car rack or train, pushing it with a flat battery, or maneuvering it in a tight hallway. Heavier bikes also need stronger brakes and are harder to control at walking speed.
Carrying an e-bike up stairs
- Take the battery off first: on most bikes that removes 6–9 lb.
- Lift with the bike on your shoulder or hip, holding the frame near the seat and the handlebar stem, rather than by the wheels.
- Many riders find anything over about 50 lb hard to carry up more than one flight. A bike you dread carrying is a bike you won’t ride.
- Consider a folding bike you can roll, or ground-floor storage, if the bike will be heavy.
Common questions
What is the average weight of an e-bike?
Most e-bikes weigh 50–75 lb with the battery. Lightweight commuters can be under 45 lb; cargo, fat-tire and moped-style bikes often weigh 75–100 lb.
How much does an e-bike battery weigh?
Typically 6–9 lb for a 500–750 Wh battery. Removing it before carrying the bike makes a noticeable difference.
Are folding e-bikes lighter?
Not usually. Folding e-bikes are smaller, not lighter, and many weigh as much as a full-size bike. They solve storage rather than carrying.
